(Hawks’ Senior Forward Led Conference in Points, Goals and Assists)
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Hartwick College senior Edwin Ruiz (Miami, Fla./Miami South Ridge) was named the 2004 Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) Player of the Year today, in voting done by the league's coaches. A forward, Ruiz led the ASC in scoring this past season, tallying 35 points on 13 goals and nine assists. Ruiz played a major role in the Hawks’ finishing with a 13-3-3 overall record, helping the team to a 4-1-0 mark in conference play.
Rookie of the Year accolades went to a member of the Philadelphia University squad for the second straight season as freshman midfielder Mike Millar (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) won the award. Millar made an immediate impact for second-year Head Coach Greg Wilson this past season, topping the Rams in scoring with seven goals and one assist for 15 points.
Rounding out the 2004 major award winners was Florida International University Head Coach Karl Kremser as the ASC Coach of the Year. Kremser led the Golden Panthers, in their final season as a member of the conference, to its third consecutive ASC title and fourth in five years. In doing so, Kremser’s team earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Tournament where they will host the University of Central Florida on Friday in Miami, Fla.
