 [ 01-29-2005 ]NJIT’S SUTHERLAND PLAYS FOR REGIONAL ODP SQUAD Men’s Soccer Goalkeeper Awaits Word On French Tournament NEWARK, N.J. – Ryan Sutherland of Harrisville, Rhode Island, a freshman at New Jersey Institute of Technology and a member of the Highlanders’ men’s soccer team, was selected to the Region I Olympic Development Program (ODP) team for his age group during NJIT’s winter break. Sutherland was the starting keeper for Region I at the United States Youth Soccer 1986 ODP Interregionals, held earlier this month at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California. He was named a notable player during the event. Region I stretches from Maine to Virginia. Sutherland is awaiting word on the possibility of representing Region I in a tournament in May in France. “Ryan works rigorously to improve his play in goal, and his performance at the Interregionals was evidence that he can compete at the highest level,” said NJIT head coach Pedro Lopes. “I’m confident that, if chosen for further competition, Ryan will once again represent the Region I team well.” NJIT recently completed its first season as a member of NCAA Division I. Sutherland played in eight games, starting seven, with 41 saves and a 4.32 goals-against average. He is a 2004 graduate of Burrilville High. New Jersey Institute of Technology, the state’s public research university, enrolls more than 8,200 students in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in 100 degree programs. NJIT is renowned for expertise in architecture, applied mathematics, wireless communications and networking, solar physics, advanced engineered particulate materials, nanotechnology, neural engineering and eLearning.
